Breaking Up With Google

Here’s the Situation:

For years, I have relied on Google Services for much of my day-to-day. I have even had moments of pride, proclaiming that I have sold my soul to Google in exchange for seamless integration and ubiquity. But as digital privacy becomes a larger social concern, I am starting to scale back my reliance on big brother.

Today, I am starting my break up with Google.

The Approach:

I started this journey with a list of the products that I use, then started ranking them by switching cost:

  • Chrome
  • Search
  • Movies/TV
  • Keyboard
  • Music
  • Photos
  • Drive
  • Keep
  • Maps
  • Authenticator
  • Voice
  • Mail
  • Domains

Furthermore, I broke it up into stages that I would tackle:

  • Chrome
  • Search + Movies/TV
  • Keyboard + Music + Photos
  • Drive + Keep + Maps
  • Authenticator + Voice
  • Mail + Domains

This is now my roadmap, which I hope leads to freedom and privacy (and sanity).
